The Thomas Dixon Centre, originally built in 1908, is a state-heritage-listed building and now home to Queensland Ballet. Transformed into a world-class performing arts and cultural destination, the redevelopment honours the building’s rich history while creating a contemporary, state-of-the-art space for artists, audiences, and the community.

A key element of the project was integrating functional, atmospheric lighting within the architectural details of the space, notably within the feature staircases, balancing performance requirements with heritage sensitivity. The scope was to deliver discreet, thoughtful handrail lighting that would serve both as an architectural feature and as functional, code-compliant illumination for safe movement and egress. It also needed to support dimmable ambient lighting during performances and provide an inclusive “Low Sensory Mode” for visitors with sensory sensitivities.

Working closely with Ellis Wilson from X Buro, Andrew Tiley Euroluce Lighting Consultant, and the broader design and construction team, developed a tailored lighting strategy. Planet Lighting’s SNAP Puck luminaires were selected for their compact form, reliable performance, and flexibility in finish options, including Raw Brass, Polished Brass, and Aged Bronze/Patina. The Raw Brass SNAP Pucks were chosen to seamlessly complement the heritage aesthetic of the main staircase.

The SNAP Pucks are DALI-2 compatible and were integrated with Zen Control systems, providing full dimming and emergency lighting functionality in line with building compliance. This allows Queensland Ballet to easily adjust lighting levels for performances, general circulation, or Low Sensory Mode, creating a welcoming and considered experience for all visitors.

The result is a beautifully resolved lighting solution that subtly enhances the architectural fabric of the Thomas Dixon Centre, preserving its heritage charm while delivering modern functionality. The integration of concealed, dimmable lighting within handcrafted brass and stainless steel handrails not only ensures safe passage but also elevates the ambience of the space. This project stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful, collaborative design and the role of considered lighting in enriching public, performance, and cultural environments.
