Maantis by Richard Rogers

As a project the design of Maantis is the first time that Richard Rogers Partnership (RRP) have worked on a product range which can be used in new-build office space. The concept allows standard 'T5' strip lighting, spot and LED lighting to be incorporated within a lighting system offering a highly aesthetic approach to lighting design.  The system is based along a central aluminium spine from which emanate a series of prismatic 'ribs' made from translucent polycarbonate. The idea was born out of an initial conversation between the late Goffredo Reggiani, founder of Reggiani Illuminazione, and Richard Rogers. They identified a significant gap in the market for high quality office lighting systems, which embraces technology to maximise luminescence through a highly efficient design. Their inspiration was taken from the subtle, iridescent glow of deep-sea creatures from the abyss. The natural evolution of these creatures has evolved with them emitting light energy which is purely derived from their own structure and metabolism.  In the same way, the prismatic polycarbonate ribs are designed to ensure that rays emanating from the principal T5 light source are diffused, reflected and refracted in such a way that the amount of light spillage and glare is minimised and the system performs in a highly efficient manner. Even when the light is switched off, the prismatic ribs continue to absorb light and colours from the surrounding space and produce a slight translucent glow, depending on the exact lighting conditions. The LEDs are used as an automatic lighting system. They have a dual function both as zonal indicators for large open-plan offices and as a source of low-level lighting during after-work hours. The optional use of a spot-light is offered by an additional arm at the end of the central spine. This feature can also be used to locate movement sensors, which automatically illuminate a space when someone enters a room or particular space in the office.
